Q&A:
Where do you get your ideas?
There's no set process or "formula" for ideas, really. Usually I simply get ideas when walking around; catching sight of a scene or bit of lighting that
might be fun to paint. Often the pieces are based off of my own stories that I have developed. Sometimes, if I'm really stuck for ideas, I simply turn my
playlist on random and pick out bits of song lyrics that sound right or suggest interesting imagery.
You can get ideas from anywhere, you just have to let your mind wander enough and they're sure to appear.
What does "Yumeki" mean?
"Yumeki" is romanized Japanese, and could be read either as "dream tree" (夢木) or "dream spirit" (夢気). I wanted a name that would reflect
something of the spirit of my work, with a whimsical focus. To me it suggests the idea of sitting under a big tree in summer and daydreaming about
your favorite fantasies. I chose a Japanese construct because I have spent quite a few years studying the language and the culture of Japan, and
I wanted a name that would also reflect that influence.
Do you sell your originals?
I do! If interested in purchasing an original painting, please e-mail me for the price.
Are you currently taking commissions?
I am generally always open for commissions.
What do your commissions cost?
The cost of a commission varies depending on the style, media, and amount of detail needed.
If you are interestedin a commission, please e-mail me for a quote.
Can I post your art on my website?
I would prefer not. However, please feel free to link back to any of the pieces here or on my deviantart gallery.
What program(s) do you use for digital art?
Mostly Adobe Photoshop CS2 and a Wacom Intuos 2 4x5" tablet. I occasionally do vector work in Adobe Illustrator.
What media do you work in?
Most of my pieces lately have been watercolor, with india ink lines. I also sometimes use colored pencils, or mix all three together. Very occasionally
I will use acrylic.
How big are your paintings?
I used to work mostly on smaller pieces, but now I find most of my originals to be at least 15x20, or about half a sheet of watercolor paper. Sometimes
I do larger pieces, but these tend not to be much more than 18x24", simply because I don't have the studio or storage space to accomodate them.
Did/do you go to art school?
Yes. I graduated from the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis in May 2010.
What websites do you recommend for art?
DeviantArt is the most popular by far, and I do have a gallery there, but more and more I'm preferring the Conceptart.org forums for art advice. They
give good (if harsh) critique there, but more importantly, they run a variety of weekly and daily challenges on environments, characters, creatures, and
other subjects, and those can be a real help in breaking out of your comfort zone.
Who are your favorite artists/who inspires you?
I love the work of Ursula Vernon. She was one of the first artists I watched online and one who taught me that it's okay to make a career out of
weird or "silly" work. I also greatly admire Stephanie 'Pui-Mun' Law, Shaun Tan, Allison Strom, Henry Magritte, and Dave McKean, to name just a few,
along with dozens of others.
